Sun Blocked |
"Sun Blocked" is the fifth episode of Animated Inanimate Battle, and final episode of Season 1A.
Synopsis[]
When a heat wave sweeps through The Blank Slate, the contestants find ways to cool off. But even so, tensions within Team 4 continue to run hot
Plot[]
Who Turned Up The Heat?[]
A heat wave blankets the Blank Slate as all the contestants struggle to deal with the heat. Chalk has what appears to be a sunburn, Hailstone has melted away, and Chocolate Chip is in the process of melting. An irritated Coconut asks where Oodle is, only for Toothpick to respond that he's taking an R&R day in a brand-new house he made for himself.
While Hanger jumps into the melted Hailstone's remains, she realizes the existence of the ocean water, prompting all the contestants to have a pool party. A volleyball game occurs between Frisbee and Ketchup & Album and Coconut, resulting in an accident where Album obtains multiple new scratches. Alef and Toothpick wash themselves of the paint on their bodies from last episode.
Oodle eventually emerges out of his house. At Sock's request, he revives Hailstone, who asks Oodle if he can talk to him about something, Oodle informs her that he has to do the elimination.
Elimination[]
The members of Team 4 convince Oodle to hold the elimination in the ocean.
During the elimination, Alef wins the prize vote, winning a flashlight, much to his chagrin. In an attempt to influence the elimination vote, Alef reveals the paint bucket with a red, upside-down triangle symbol on it.
Oodle freaks out, being reminded of the paint monster, while Alef accuses Nabla of engineering the paint monster. Glue and Leek defend Nabla, while Ketchup and Frisbee back up Alef's accusation. However, before the argument can escalate further, Oodle portals the paint can away from Alef.
Oodle rushes to get the elimination vote done and over with. Glue rushes over to Alef's buzzer and presses it, and Frisbee and Ketchup do the same to Nabla. Leek votes for Alef, due to as Leek said, they had the “challenge under control” until Alef came. An argument occurs between Nabla and Alef, forcing them to vote for each other.
Meanwhile, Whoopee Cushion is giggling to himself, having pressed his own buzzer. Overly confident that he'll stay in, his joke goes awry when Envelope snaps and ends up voting for Whoopee Cushion, calling him unfunny. Lyre agrees and backs up Envelope, voting for him as well. Nervous, Whoopee Cushion asks to change his vote, only for Oodle to tell him that all votes are final. With one vote left, this causes Toothpick to panic and ends up voting for Whoopee Cushion. To a vote of 3-3-4, Whoopee Cushion is eliminated.
Envelope and Lyre try to comfort Toothpick for choosing Whoopee Cushion, saying it was in the best interest for the team. Toothpick expresses doubt that the team would survive in the long run, as the other 2/3rds of the team are at each others' throats (or lack thereof, as objects don't have throats).
The Challenge[]
Enraged by the sun's heat, Frisbee ferociously throws a javelin at it (Nabla calls him a "brainlet", only to be pushed away by him bringing up the argument again), causing it to fracture and ultimately break, plunging the Blank Slate into pitch-black darkness.
Donning his mechanic garb, Oodle attempts to fix the sun, succeeding slightly. However, the sun and the Blank Slate are still dimmed out.
He mentions that he did manage to fix it enough to make everyone not freeze to death (Apricot freaks out over the fact this was an option), then he states he unfortunately can't relight it until he has all the pieces. And due to a certain "somebody-who-will-not-be-named's" actions, there are still a few pieces out there. Envelope spills the tea on the somebody being Frisbee (Frisbee gets ticked off at that statement as everyone looks at him). Oodle annoyingly states that "regardless of who's fault it is... mmFRISBEE...," he segues into the next challenge.
An instructional video by Tivo appears as Oodle is explaining the challenge. The contestants must find five sun pieces hidden in the Blank Slate (specifically the game area). Their task is to find one and bring it back to Oodle; the one team who fails to find one will be up for elimination (or, by Oodle's direct words "dead last and dead in the water".) He brings up the light sources (Alef with his flashlight, Fireball, and Candle), and everyone on Team 5 tries to protect Fireball, but they fail miserably.
Finding the Sun Pieces[]
Popsicle Stick, still on Team 2, notes the existence of a sun piece on the mountain. Hailstone is irked by Popsicle Stick calling the shots, but Can shrugs it off, saying she had the same idea regardless.
In the distance, Chip Bag suggests to her team that they should follow Team 2 and snipe their sun piece. Creamy tries to get her back in her bubble wrap suit; Chip Bag comically says "[she'd] rather die."
On Team 6, the Leader Wheel lands on Package. While devising a plan, a deranged and off-character Nacho latches onto her head, rambling about Package's inner styrofoam peanuts. Package, realizing Nacho is the greater problem (by saying they already "have one deranged sociopath on [the] team," with Glassy saying she loves her too), tells Team 6 to go to their pizza party.
Candle lights herself, trying to encourage Blanket to break out of her shell. Coconut, however, is more concerned about where Album exactly is...
Behind a rock, Album is sulking, self-conscious about her scars. Suddenly, a mysterious voice speaks up behind her. The voice reveals a pair of cat-like eyes (scaring Album), introducing themself as a "friendly neighborhood set-of-eyes obscured by darkness." Eager to solve Album's problem, he hands Album anti-scratch cream (and Album asks if it's "for real"), on the house. He notes that he and Album now have a thing going and that they should expect to see each other again; Album asks for his name, with the mysterious salesman introducing himself as "Shade." He recedes back into the darkness. Album applies the cream onto herself, right as her team finds her brooding. Candle notices the change; Album shrugs it off nervously.
Telescope is still doubtful of Bone's new personality (saying that they still have a restraining order on him), but the rest of Team 3 shrug his concerns off, citing several kind actions the new Bone has done with them. Telescope is irritated, and after having a brief stand-off with Bone, walks off to find the sun piece.
Alef finds a sun piece in Team 1's claw machine. Team 4 is split on how to retrieve the piece; Glue, Nabla, and Leek rush to it, while the "bro-liance" urges them to let them take over the operation. Both sides begin to argue, as Lyre attempts to break the scuffle, being irritated by their loud arguing. Envelope takes offense to Lyre's words, taking it as an insult to his loud voice. Everyone except Toothpick begins to argue.
As the rest of Team 4 argues with one another, Toothpick sneaks into Team 1's claw machine and nabs the sun piece with her tip, hopping out and starts running away with it. The split Team 4 chase after her.
Toothpick manages to get the sun piece over to Oodle. He remarks Team 4's last-to-first finish, only to ask where the rest of Toothpick's team is. A fight cloud rolls over to them. It dissipates and all six infighters fall to the ground. Lyre and Envelope come up from behind, with Lyre stating that there is absolutely no internal conflict in Team 4, with Envelope confirming. Oodle totally believes that; he also returns to Frisbee a now-glowing javelin.
Package's plan comes to fruition as they manage to glob all the mozzarella cheese together into an amorphous blob. Package theorizes that Nacho losing her cheese was what made her go off the rails. Even as Yellow Food Dye expresses hesitation over the non-Nacho cheese, Package forces them to shove the cheese onto Nacho, who is laying in Showery's tub.
The pile of mozzarella morphs into a vaguely Italian-esque hairstyle. Nacho adopts a more flirtatious and sanguine attitude, as Glassy is rolling on the floor laughing over Package's folly. Glove finds an extra piece of moldy pizza and a glowing rock — which happens to be a sun piece, to Package's relief.
Team 5 is still trailing Team 2 up the mountain (as Domino says a bunch of british gibberish). Team 2 threatens to defend their sun piece from Team 5, with the latter responding with Fireball as their defense. Fireball swings her pickaxe into the ground, causing the ground beneath them to crack and collapse.
Absent from Team 5 is Pitchfork, who is brooding in her own way. Across from her is the Glowstick plush, whom she's eyeing venomously. As she argues with the plush, she starts hallucinating, with the plush becoming reality to her eyes, and naming all her flaws. Infuriated, Pitchfork yells and ends the hallucination by ripping the plush in half. She drops both halves and starts hyperventilating, stomping on the plush. Tivo looks at her with a worried expression from a distance.
Meanwhile, Team 5 are now stuck in a pitch-black cave. Fireball flares up momentarily, lighting up the cavern. In return, the cave's crystals shine alight. Everyone on Team 5 is in awe. They slowly find out that the crystals have magical properties: a purple crystal charges Gold Nugget's phone and Apricot's Pear Detector, a scarlet crystal burns Domino's hand, and a sky blue crystal freezes Chip Bag, killing her as she falls onto the ground (with Creamy declaring that "[she's] starting to think that protecting her is a lost cause").
Suddenly, a shadowy figure swooshes by. The rest of Team 5 huddle together, as a mushroom character known as Spore emerges from the shadows. Spore is paranoid of Team 5, accusing them of trying to steal her crystal collection, and is overly protective of it and a newly-found sun piece. Filmy attempts to snatch the piece away from her, but Spore releases a noxious gas which temporarily incapacitates him and the rest of Team 5. Apricot manages to get the sun piece by knocking a crystal into the air with Fireball's pickaxe, prompting Spore to drop the sun piece and catch the sky-blue crystal, freezing her. Team 5 flies off on Antimatter with the sun piece (even though they first don't see a way out, but then realizes it and "duh"'s themself).
Team 3 is struggling to find a sun piece. Brick smells the ground, and smells fresh conflict, noting Team 4 was there before them. Bone hides behind a claw machine and talks to his Red Eyes, afraid that Telescope's suspecting something. Red Eyes, however, threatens Bone into keeping quiet. He signs off, as Bone looks achingly into the reflection of the claw machine.
While on Antimatter, Apricot upgrades Gold Nugget's phone with a purple crystal, charging it infinitely. Fireball is surprised at Apricot's ingenuity, but Apricot brushes her surprise and amazement off. Fireball looks away melancholically.
Team 5 turns in their piece first, with Domino teasing Oodle about the cave under the mountain. Oodle feigns ignorance.
Team 2 rushes in with their sun piece, followed by Team 6. Package tells Oodle about their Nacho problem (and after Oodle finds out about Nacho's serenading, he says "that is terrifying"); Oodle resolves this by giving a Cheese of the Month subscription card to them. He tells them to look out for someone named "Parcel", then walks accidentally into the stack of sun pieces, and trips over them. The camera pans up to the broken sun in the distance and flashes neon lights to reveal Teams 1 and 3 are the final two teams.
The Final Two Showdown[]
Team 1 is also struggling to find a sun piece. It doesn't help that Album keeps scratching herself as she applies more and more anti-scratch cream, and that Candle has melted away into a pile of wax. Album begins to glow as she keeps scratching herself. The rest of her team express concern, but Album poorly covers up her secrets and her scratches.
Blanket notifies her team that she found a sun piece. At the same time, Telescope notifies his team that he found a sun piece— the same sun piece Blanket was pointing toward. The two teams race toward the beach, where a sun piece is perched upon an ice block. Blanket rushes over to the iceberg, while Telescope is right on her tail.
Blanket and Telescope begin to fight each other on the iceberg, and Roe breaks free of Pill's lasso. In the middle of the fight, Roe breaks off from Pill. Away from the battle is Album, who is still scratching herself and is glowing brighter. Brick notices and comes over, giving her words of comfort, interested in her internal conflict. They bond over their scratches, with Brick recanting his tale of how proud he is of his battle chips. He tells Album to take pride in her scratches as well, a piece of advice that Album takes kindly towards.
Brick then reads the label on Album's cream. He notes that the reason why Album is glowing and uncomfortable is that the cream is combustible (which Album is surprised about). Shortly after, Album bursts into flames and starts screaming, freaking out and running directly into Farty, causing a huge explosion near the ocean. Back with Oodle and the safe contestants, Oodle turns towards the explosion, questioning what has happened, and Glove smells the air, and groans from it, then questions "who farted."
Meanwhile, Shade is in an inlet on the mountain, pretending to ignore the giant explosion (even though he mentions it when he says "uh... whoops".
Surprisingly, Cork emerges from the explosion mostly unscathed (apart from a bit of charring), retrieving the sun piece for Team 3 and giving it to Oodle. Oodle doesn't recognize Cork at first (by calling him Hockey Puck), and squishes him back into his original cork shape.
Here Comes the Sun[]
Oodle orders Tivo to fast-forward the episode; when it cuts back, Oodle has fixed the sun. He bangs on it twice, and it lights up. The whole Blank Slate is back to normal, and everyone celebrates.
He recovers everyone, announcing to the newly-revived Team 3 that Cork won the challenge for them, and to the newly-revived Team 1 that they have lost for the second time.
All's Well That Ends Well[]
Album takes the blame for the team's catastrophic loss. Coconut manages to cheer her up by showing her that her scratches have completely disappeared— except for the first scratch that she received prior to An Ice Beginning. She accepts the scratch as part of her.
Chocolate Chip indulges in Blanket's victory against Telescope— a victory that would have happened if Album didn't explode, Flaggy notes. Regardless, Blanket gains newfound confidence over Team 1 cheering her "victory."
Likewise, Pill indulges in Team 1 coming together, expressing his happiness to Roe, who has disappeared. Pill panics, and frantically looks everywhere for her. Cinnamon Bun and Mitten joke about his attachment issues.
Ending Scene[]
Oodle walks inside his home and pulls on a wire on his bed, causing the rug he's standing on to descend downward. He elevators down to a secret compartment in his home, filled with a massive collection of interdimensional paraphernalia and mementos.
He picks up the paint can that he portal'd away during the elimination, and places it down next to a stack of newspapers, a ripped photo featuring only him now, and what appears to be a taser, then walks away while sipping coffee. The scene turns dark, with only the red triangle on the paint can being illuminated. The screen then displays "End of Season 1A," before cutting to the credits.
